As of early July, health authorities in the DRC have reported 1,792 confirmed cases, leading to 625 deaths, while 295 individuals have successfully recovered. This challenging situation is spread across 37 health zones in the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with additional cases recently identified in Kisangani, Tshopo Province. ## Understanding Ebola Virus Disease Ebola is a serious, often deadly, viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates. It is caused by an infection with one of the Ebola virus species. The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and then spreads in the human population through direct contact with blood, body fluids, or organs of an infected person, or with contaminated surfaces and materials. The incubation period, or the time interval from infection to onset of symptoms, can range from 2 to 21 days. ## The DRC's Persistent Battle Against Ebola The ongoing outbreak in the DRC is particularly complex because it is unfolding in a region plagued by persistent insecurity and the displacement of millions of people due to armed conflict. This instability significantly hinders humanitarian access, making it incredibly difficult to implement effective Ebola prevention, surveillance, and response measures. Ituri province remains the hardest hit area, accounting for a staggering 91% of all confirmed cases and nearly 86% of the associated deaths. The presence of over two million forcibly displaced individuals in Ebola-affected or high-risk areas of eastern DRC, including 320,000 refugees and asylum-seekers, heightens the urgency of the response. While refugees have not yet reported cases, 19 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from sites in Ituri have been confirmed with Ebola. This highlights the critical need for inclusive preparedness plans, clear risk communication, robust surveillance systems, and equitable access to national response services for everyone, regardless of their displacement status. ## Ebola's Status in Uganda Neighboring Uganda has also reported an Ebola outbreak, though it appears to be relatively more contained. As of early July, Uganda confirmed 20 cases, with two tragic deaths, 17 recoveries, and one patient currently receiving care. Uganda's previous experiences with Ebola outbreaks have helped establish a degree of preparedness, but the cross-border nature of the disease always presents a significant risk, especially given the high movement of people between the two countries. ## How Ebola Spreads and Recognising Symptoms Ebola typically spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids (such as blood, vomit, feces, urine, saliva, semen, and breast milk) of an infected person, or with objects that have been contaminated with these fluids. This includes things like soiled clothing, bedding, and medical equipment. Transmission can also occur through direct contact with infected wild animals or during unsafe burial practices where mourners come into direct contact with the body of an Ebola victim. Initial symptoms of Ebola can be non-specific, often resembling other common illnesses, which makes early detection challenging. These include sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache, and a sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, rash, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding. It's vital for individuals experiencing these symptoms, especially in affected areas, to seek immediate medical attention. ## Preventing and Controlling Ebola's Spread Effective control of Ebola outbreaks relies on a multi-pronged approach. Key strategies include rapid identification of cases, thorough contact tracing to identify everyone who may have come into contact with an infected person, isolating infected individuals, and providing them with supportive care. Safe and dignified burial practices are also paramount to prevent further transmission from deceased individuals. Community engagement and education are critical components. Ensuring communities understand the disease, how it spreads, and what precautions to take helps build trust and promotes adherence to public health measures. Vaccination plays a significant role in prevention, with an effective Ebola vaccine (Ervebo) available and widely used in outbreak responses to protect frontline workers and contacts of confirmed cases. ## Treatment and Care for Ebola Patients While Ebola can be deadly, significant advancements have been made in treatment. Early diagnosis and supportive care are crucial. This includes providing intravenous fluids and balancing electrolytes, maintaining oxygen status and blood pressure, and treating other infections if they occur. Recent years have also seen the development and deployment of specific treatments, such as monoclonal antibody therapies, which have dramatically improved survival rates when administered early in the disease course. These medical breakthroughs offer hope and improve the chances of recovery for those who contract the virus. ## The Indispensable Role of Humanitarian Support Organizations like the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other United Nations agencies are working tirelessly alongside the Governments of the DRC and Uganda, as well as local communities. Their collective efforts are focused on strengthening Ebola prevention and response activities. This support ensures that critical information about Ebola, surveillance systems, and essential services are accessible to all, including refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons, and host communities. Their work is vital for coordinating the response, providing technical expertise, mobilizing resources, and helping build the capacity of local health systems to manage outbreaks effectively and sustainably. ## Global Health Security and Continued Vigilance Ebola outbreaks underscore the importance of robust global health security and cross-border collaboration. Diseases know no borders, and rapid, coordinated international action is essential to contain outbreaks and prevent them from spreading further. Continued vigilance, investment in public health infrastructure, and sustained support for affected countries are paramount to protecting populations from Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases.
