Abstract
Bronchial challenge tests are important clinical examinations for detecting airway hyperresponsiveness, with methacholine being a commonly used provocative agent. However, the previous guidelines had not been updated in a timely manner, leading to some problems in clinical application. The "<i>Standard technical specifications for methacholine chloride (Methacholine) bronchial challenge test (2023)</i>" is an updated and refined version of 2014 "<i>Guidelines for Pulmonary Function Testing (Part Ⅲ)-Histamine and Methacholine Bronchial Challenge Tests</i>". In the 2023 version, the scope of MCT applicability is clarified, which covers key aspects such as pre-test preparation, test methods and procedures, result interpretation, and report requirements. Additionally, it provides detailed information on potential adverse reactions and their management. The 2023 version also introduces the continuous breathing forced oscillation technique(Astograph method), recommending both the Aerosol Provocation System (APS) and the Astograph method as preferred clinical approaches, and emphasizes the use of PD20 as an indicator.
